internal kung fu

Posted on Feb 11th, 2006 by sensei : visionary sensei
so...over the past ten years or so...i've been plagued with a series of kidney stones...which decide to form in my kidney and journey on out ever few years causing much pain and distress to my body...the pain has often been compared to childbirth...not only because of the intensity but also duration...i've spent many hours in the ER waiting for pain meds...and then laying in recovery...
so recently...i started to experience that familiar pain arise...in my lower back...but much deeper than a muscle pain...
but this time i tried using some of the internal kungfu that i've been learning to try to ease the pain...i began by flexing the muscles of my abdomen while breathing deeply into the area of pain...increasing the pressure around the kidney area...and within about twenty minutes of doing this...the pain went away completely...the stone apparently was massaged and contracted down to my bladder where it would easily pass...

the breathing practices i've learned in my internal martial arts classes are pretty amazing...they function to channel the inhalation into specific parts of the body...first, three inches below the navel...to test this put your hand there and also your hand on the belly...try to breathe into the lower area without moving the belly...overtime, you will be able to move this area with much more control and force...
there are other areas that can also be focused upon with the inhalation...these include the kidneys as mentioned, the lower back, the spot at the base of the skull above the spine, the pelvis, and the feet...

agreeing with Matt…. I even tried the inhaling as you described in the lower abdomen… quite the challenge!  I’ve heard many amazing things about martial arts training… I think there is much that I could learn… but I’ve never been motivated to follow that course.

Your practice of internal kung fu is very interesting… I’d love to learn more about it!
